DIY---Ecotech Vortech Battery backup
« on: December 30, 2011, 22:06:57 »
I know a few of you have been asking, and I happened across this on another forum(link provided below for courtesy) that shows just how easy and inexpensive a DIY battery backup for these are....

*****I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY RESULT FROM THIS DIY POSTS,  BUILD AT YOUR OWN RISK*****

After seeing what's inside the battery backup I decided to build my own. The parts are the same spec as those inside the box and it's wired exactly the same but I won't have the box but I did save myself $97.00!

    Here's a list of parts:
12vdc/18amp sealed lead acid battery from Royal Battery, Malden $35
Werker 12vdc/1000ma charger with indicator from Batteries Plus $26
    Radio Shack #270-1238 5x20mm fuse holder $ 3
    Radio Shack #270-1050 5x20mm 1.5amp fuse (4 pack) $ 3
    Radio Shack #274-1571 1.3mm, size H DC power plug $ 3
    Misc connectors, 6' of 20 gauge wire $ 2

    Total: $72.00

I made one of these. It works great!  Total cost was around $40.  I used a few different parts because I'm cheap...

Charger - Harbor Freight item#42292. They often have a coupon that knocks this down to $5.  Cut off the clamps and solder on some terminals.
Battery - Batteries Plus Item# WKA12-8F.  It's smaller then the one used in the above DIY, but should still run an MP10 for more than 24hours.  B+ also has discounts with a lot of companies, which saved me $10.

I also put it all in a case for aesthetics and safety. RadioShack Catalog# 270-1807

Didn't bother to take a pic because it looks like a black box with two wires coming out.  But it does work!
